80 years of Langton’s Furnishing

The Leicester Mercury of Wednesday October 8th carried a full page 3 article on the history of Langton’s Furnishings now based on Church Gate Leicester. It was a wonderful pleasure to read.

In a previous life as City Centre Manager I remember them well.  I remember their support as we tried to maintain the vibrancy of the shopping street with substantial street improvements. For their part they restored the art deco style of the building, following its use as a garage for Castle’s Motors to make it a flagship store at the western end of the street.

The article in the paper highlighted the four generations of the owners from the end of the second world war when Ernald Langton returned to set the company up.

I knew both John and Richard the second and third generation owners and from both I have bought beds and a sofa. I did not even know that Richard had died in July. It is a lovely traditional family business that for me has provided wonderful personal old-fashioned service over a number of years.

Amy and Richard

I do hope that daughter Amy can continue this tradition. It is so important for the health of the city centre that such family businesses survive and prosper. They deserve to do so as the company has invested heavily over the years in making their shop attractive and functional and a credit to Church gate.

Go for it, Amy the fourth generation. Please support this famous Leicester shop.
